Power Dissipation of Analog-to-Digital Converters

چکیده

The power dissipation of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is a function of many variables, such as sampling rate (f S), resolution, architecture, process, voltage supply and technology. This chapter will attempt to establish the power dependence on sampling rate and resolution as its primary goal. To make this tenable, the scope of this task will be narrowed in the following two ways: 1. Architectures: Only those ADC's suitable for use in high-speed signal processing considered. 2. Process: Coverage will be restricted to high-integration capable IC processes such as bipolar, BiCMOS and CMOS processes which allow embedding of the ADC function in a monolithic signal processing chip. Even with a narrower scope, only a first-order analysis is attempted in light of the many variables that influence the power of an ADC. After developing power relationships for the above A/D architectures, the results of this analysis will be used to estimate the power

Improving adaptive resolution of analog to digital converters using least squares mean method

This paper presents an adaptive digital resolution improvement method for extrapolating and recursive analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The presented adaptively enhanced ADC (AE-ADC) digitally estimates the digital equivalent of the input signal by utilizing an adaptive digital filter (ADF). The least mean squares (LMS) algorithm also determines the coefficients of the ADF block. In this sch...

Noise , Speed , and Power Trade - offs in Pipelined Analog to Digital Converters

Power dissipation is becoming an increasingly important issue in the design of analog to digital converters as signal processing systems move into applications requiring either portability, or as in the case of some telecommunications applications, a high degree of parallelism. This research focuses on minimizing power dissipation in high resolution pipelined analog to digital converters, which...

Design Considerations for Low-Power, High-Speed CMOS Analog/Digital Converters

This paper reviews architectural and circuit design considerations for realization of low power dissipation in high-speed CMOS A/D converters. Basic limitations on achievable power dissipation in MOS samplers and quantizers is first discussed. Then a number of practical design aspects are illustrated with discussion of a 10-bit, 20-Msample/s pipeline A/D converter[1] implemented in 1.2-μm CMOS ...

Design and VLSI Implementation of Second Order Sigma-Delta Modulation ADC for I-UWB Receiver

Analog to Digital converters plays an essential role in modern mixed signal circuit design. Mixed-signal System-on-chip devices such as Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADC) have become increasingly prevalent in the semiconductor industry. Nyquist Samplers require a complicated analog low pass filter to limit the maximum frequency input to the A/D and Sample and Hold circuit. Sigma-Delta (ΣΔ) modu...

Analysis of Integral Nonlinearity in Radix-4 Pipelined Analog-to-Digital Converters

In this paper an analytic approach to estimate the nonlinearity of radix-4 pipelined analog-to-digital converters due to the circuit non-idealities is presented. Output voltage of each stage is modeled as sum of the ideal output voltage and non-ideal output voltage (error voltage), in which non-ideal output voltage is created by capacitor mismatch, comparator offset, input offset, and finite ga...

Design and Implementation of a Low Power Second Order Sigma-Delta ADC

Sigma-Delta (∑-∆) analog to digital converters are well known for its use in high accuracy wireless communication applications. It is alternative for low power, high resolution (greater than 12 bits) converters, which can be ultimately integrated on digital signal Processor ICs. In this work Over Sampling concept is used to address the problem of power dissipation and noise in ADCs. In this pap...
